Our Philosophy

It's simple. To create beautiful things.

For smaller businesses it is sometimes hard to find the time to really think about and spend time on progressing your brand.

Consistent and professional communications to your customers is an important first step.

We believe in strategy, in positioning, in clear goals and call to actions - and that is why all these things are explored in creating each and every thing we do.

You can market your business better than the competition with minimal outlay, but with a better understanding of the arsenal at your disposal.

Let us help design what is right for you.

Good Design

Good design is based on functionality and grounded in the user experience first and foremost.

Who are your customers and what do they want to find/know/experience?

What is Spot UV?

You may have heard of the term Spot UV.

You have seen Spot UV print and thought what is that!

Spot UV is a term referring to the printing (more specifically coating) of varnish onto paper or cardstock. Cured by UV light (hence the name), the results can be stunning.

Put onto a select area of the page, Spot UV can be used to highlight an image or text, or simply used to create a pattern or design element.

Predominantly used on business cards and brochure covers, Spot UV allows for a high end, or simply an eye catching and high impact visual. This technique also allows the ability (or illusion) of printing black on black, or white on white etc.

There are a range of options out there when selecting visual and textural elements to your printed collateral, so discuss with your designer or your printer and do a little desktop research.

Contact Document by Design for more information. We can even supply printing price comparisons.

The often hidden value of negative space

I seem to spend a lot of time trying to convince people of the value of a clean white or negative space.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Here I am referring to filling in every last ounce of room on your page or artboard.

If you follow the logic that is unused space is waster space, that particular rabbit hole can only finish once a 1pt condensed font is applied and all margins are done away with.

Good design is clever. Good design draws and directs the eyes. Good design gets the right message across and does not clutter with often trivial additional extras.

As always, commercial design needs to consider a range of elements in its make up, and this will have influence on page layout and density. The brand needs to be considered and of course the type of publication.

Don't be afraid of negative space.
